Settled between the Wet Mountain and the Sangre de Cristo Mountain ranges lies a lush green valley filled with awe inspiring mountain scenery. The valley is lined with mountains in every direction. Being at the base of the range, gives you unobstructed views of the Southern Rockies in all their towering glory.
We have found 2.58 acres of Colorado land the way the settlers found it. This is unspoiled and uncommercialized territory. Thankfully, the overcrowded tourist traps and ski resort metropolises are on the other side of the Rockies. This is a tranquil place to get back to nature, reset your system, and find peace. A perfect example of the local laid-back lifestyle is the favored pastime. Stargazing. Because of the lack of light pollution, the elevation, and crisp, clear mountain air, the area has been named one of few Dark Sky Parks in the world. Here you lay back and see the night sky illuminated by millions of stars seemingly so close you could reach out and touch them even without a telescope. However, Smokey Jack’s Observatory is just down the road if you would like to see even further into the heavens. Hiking a nature trail, horseback riding through the hills, or setting up camp along a secluded mountain stream might come in as a second favored pastime. Colorado’s famous Rainbow Trail spans over 100 miles and provides access to many fourteeners. You can hop on at Westcliffe, just 23 miles south, either on foot, bike, or atv.
The Wet Mountains were appropriately named by the amount of annual precipitation each year which leads to abundant rivers, falls, lakes, vegetation and wildlife. The foothills are filled with native grasses, trees, and flowers. The wildlife consists of large game such as elk, deer, black bear, mountain lion, and antelope. There are also ducks, geese, turkey, and coyotes. This is a hunters paradise. There are hundreds of bird species for watching. The many cold water streams as well as the DeWeese Reservoir State Wildlife area, just 30 minutes south, has trout, smallmouth bass, and the feisty tiger muskie for the anglers.
Westcliffe and Silvercliffe are just 23 minutes south and will have your immediate necessities such as gas, groceries, and convenience store purchases. Canon City is over the range to the west 45 min and a “must-see” destination. Make sure to ride the train through the Royal Gorge and cross the Royal Gorge Bridge. Small city amenities can be found such as big box stores, chair restaurants, medical facilities, hotels, and entertainment. Pueblo is the nearest major city and is only 1 hr 30 min. Denver is under 3 hrs. You can’t ask for a better location. Driving over the mountains to the valley will transport you to another time and place that’s slower, simpler, and good for the soul.
The land is ready and waiting. There are level areas to build your mountain cabin or pull your camper onto. You will have the perfect view regardless of the direction of your front door.
